OTTAWA, ONTARIO, November 15, 2011 –Last night at a ceremony in Kamloops, British Columbia, Correctional Service of Canada Commissioner Don Head presented the 13th annual Ron Wiebe Restorative Justice Award to Mr. Dave Hill of Edmonton, Alberta, as part of the 2011 National Restorative Justice Symposium.
Mr. Hill became a Crown Prosecutor for Alberta Justice in 1986 and is currently Assistant Chief Crown Prosecutor in Edmonton. As a Crown Prosecutor Mr. Hill has been a progressive, forward-thinking restorative justice advocate for a number of years.
“Mr. Hill’s courage to recognize and act on opportunities to meet the needs of victims and offenders within the criminal justice system is inspiring,” said Commissioner Head. “His contributions to many boards and committees demonstrates outstanding leadership, commitment and passion in promoting innovative change.”
For over 15 years, Mr. Hill has reached out at the grass roots level to bring restorative justice concepts to his community, and has actively advocated for the creation, development and advancement of restorative justice principles.
Created by CSC in 1999, the Ron Wiebe Award memorializes a former CSC Warden from the Pacific Region, who was a pioneer in the field of restorative justice within the federal correctional system. It recognizes Canadians who have demonstrated – through their work or lifestyle – ways of transforming human relationships by promoting communication and healing between those in conflict, including victims, offenders, colleagues, families or neighbours.
