The Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) is investing more than $900,000 over three years to support the development and launch of two new diploma programs by Yukon College's Trades, Technology, and Mining Division. The programs will provide specific skills and education to work in the mining, mineral exploration, remediation, and reclamation fields. Yukon College will contribute an additional $1.35 million to the initiative.
The Geosciences Technology program will cover topics such as physical, structural, historical and sedimentary geology; petrology; hydrogeology; geophysics and safety procedures; as well as mathematics, chemistry, and applied science. The Geo-Hydrological Technology specialization will provide students with skills to assess groundwater quality and quantity, and to aid in the remediation of contaminated sites.
The first graduates will receive their diplomas and be prepared to take advantage of job opportunities in May 2014.
Yukon College will use the funding to develop the curriculum, purchase equipment, renovate classrooms, market and recruit to the program, and develop an industry coordination plan.
Support for this initiative is being provided through CanNor's Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) initiative, which focuses on long-term economic growth, economic diversification and capacity building in all three territories. SINED is one of several economic development initiatives within CanNor. CanNor is responsible for coordinating and delivering Canada's economic development across the North, and for related policy development and research.
