BERESFORD, New Brunswick — Residents of Beresford will soon benefit from a new public market, thanks to an investment from the federal and provincial governments. The Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of State (Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency) and La Francophonie, the Honourable Paul Robichaud, Minister of Economic Development, and His Worship Raoul Charest, Mayor of Beresford, attended today’s funding announcement.
"This public market will feature products from regional producers, food prepared by our local entrepreneurs, and works of local artists will be on exhibit. This market will meet the needs of area residents and will help attract new visitors to the region," said Minister Valcourt. “Projects like this contribute to economic growth and create jobs, which are our Government’s top priorities.”
“Our government’s investment will provide an opportunity for local producers to showcase and sell their goods and products to area residents and visitors to the region,” said Robichaud.
“The Town of Beresford is very happy to get financial support from the federal and provincial governments,” said Mayor Charest. “We have been working on the Beresford public market project since 2005, and today's announcement acknowledges the dedication of everyone involved who have worked so hard to make it a reality.”
The project includes the renovations of a 10,500 square foot curling rink to host a new public market to operate in the spring, summer and autumn, which will support local producers. The new facility will serve the needs of farmers and citizens of various communities in the Chaleur Region.
The Government of Canada, through ACOA, is contributing $167,500 to the project under the Innovative Communities Fund (ICF), while the Government of New Brunswick is investing $187,500. The Town of Beresford is contributing $43,750.
