The Government of Canada, through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), is helping the Tourism Industry Association of Nova Scotia (TIANS) undertake skills development initiatives for the province’s tourism operators.
“The Government of Canada recognizes the key role the tourism industry plays in the development of healthy, economically sustainable communities across Nova Scotia,” said the Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of State for ACOA and La Francophonie. “Our investment will help TIANS continue to develop a thriving Nova Scotia tourism industry at the regional, provincial, and national levels.”
The ACOA investment of $119,000, through the Business Development Program, will help TIANS develop three tourism programs for operators in the province. The “Accessible Nova Scotia Program” will support training for 60 tourism industry operators in service skills for aiding persons with disabilities. TIANS’s “Quality Program” will be delivered to 20 campground operators. Program participants will meet with industry experts and receive practical advice and strategies on how to help their businesses become more profitable. The “Management Skills Development Program” will provide coaching to 40 industry managers.
The investment will also support TIANS’s “Nova Scotia Best Practices Missions” which work to help tourism operators improve their business practices and competiveness.
In addition to these programs, the ACOA investment will also support TIANS’ 2011 Tourism Summit: The Tourism Connection. The event is the largest tourism industry conference in Canada and is expected to draw more than 500 delegates.
“The tourism industry is Nova Scotia’s most promising economic sector and the key to the development of a competitive business environment,” said Darlene Grant Fiander, TIANS President. “The Tourism Summit provides the opportunity for Nova Scotia’s tourism operators to come together and celebrate achievements, share experiences and become empowered to continue to grow this industry.”
The TIANS 2011 Tourism Summit will be held November 27-29 at the World Trade and Convention Centre.
