Ottawa, Ontario (November 3, 2011) – The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development announced today adjustments to Nutrition North Canada subsidy rates.
"Nutrition North Canada is a dynamic, flexible program that focuses on access to nutritious food for Canadians living in remote, northern communities," said Minister Duncan. "These adjustments reflect the advice from our NNC Advisory Board, current data from retailers and an analysis of current shipping costs."
The subsidy applies to items covered under the program, when they are shipped by air to Northern communities. Rates are adjusted twice each year to respond to the changing needs of Northerners. These latest adjustments became effective October 1, 2011.
"Nutrition North Canada is focused on bringing healthy food to Northern homes," said Minister Duncan. "We have received important feedback from Northerners and I encourage people to continue to share their opinions with the Nutrition North Canada Advisory Board."
Nutrition North Canada is delivered in 103 remote, northern communities in Newfoundland and Labrador, Manitoba, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Ontario Quebec, Saskatchewan and Yukon.
