Ref. #2-3572
Ottawa, Ontario (November 11, 2011) – The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, on behalf of the Government of Canada, today released the following statement:
"The Government of Canada is honoured to acknowledge the achievements and sacrifices made by Aboriginal veterans. Throughout our nation's history, Aboriginal people have displayed exemplary bravery and courage in serving their country on and off the battlefield. We are grateful to them for their sacrifice and for the freedom that Canadians enjoy.
Remembrance Day and Veterans Week are opportunities for everyone to consider the sacrifices made by our veterans and reflect on the role they played in forging a proud history for all of us. Aboriginal people have fought side by side with other Canadians for this country on the front line of every major battle throughout our shared history.
Aboriginal people continue to serve in the Canadian Armed Forces with honour and heroism. Our Government is extremely grateful and proud of the active role First Nations, Inuit and Métis have taken in the global defense of our nation and for their sacrifices of the past, present, and future."
