Ottawa, Ontario (November 2, 2011) – The following statement was released today by the Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development:
"On behalf of the Government of Canada, I am delighted to extend congratulations to National Inuit Leader Mary Simon, President of ITK, and all Inuit in recognition of the fortieth anniversary of the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami ITK.
Now representing over 55,000 Inuit living in 53 communities across Canada, for 40 years, the ITK has been a strong voice advocating for the rights of Inuit. From defending land claims to climate change to seeking improved dental care for Inuit children and youth and the preservation of the Inuit language, the ITK has been championing critical social, economic, cultural and health issues on behalf of Inuit.
Many of these achievements are highlighted in a unique collection of over 40 Inuit films being launched this week by the National Film Board in collaboration with Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada, the Government of Nunavut, as well as other Inuit organizations.
I look forward to continuing our partnership with ITK and wish them every success for the future."
