Miramichi-based Sunny Corner Enterprises Inc., will increase its fabrication capabilities and grow opportunities in worldwide markets with the support of a combined investment of more than $2 million by the federal and provincial governments.
Tilly O'Neill Gordon, Member of Parliament for Miramichi and Premier David Alward were in Miramichi today to join Gordie Lavoie, president of Sunny Corner Enterprises, to make the announcement.
“Our Government’s top priority is the economy and jobs for Canadians as we build through these challenging economic times,” said MP O’Neill Gordon, on behalf of the Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and La Francophonie. “Our investments in Sunny Corner Enterprises have allowed the company to increase its fabrication capabilities, enhance its productivity and strengthen its competitiveness as an industrial manufacturer in New Brunswick.”
"Investing in the strengths of the Miramichi is central to our government's vision of economic growth for northern New Brunswick and our entire province," Alward said. "This partnership will allow Sunny Corner Enterprises to expand its operations, increase its competitiveness and create 172 much-needed new jobs for the Miramichi region.”
Project work included the purchase of equipment for an assembly line and distribution centre, as well as expansion of the existing paint shop. The new manufacturing centre is fabricating drill rigs for a large multi-national company. A related project included the planning and layout of the new facility to take full advantage of lean manufacturing strategies and value stream and supply chain reviews to enhance plant production.
“With assistance from our funding partners and our dedicated, skilled workforce we have created 85 jobs to date,” said Lavoie. “With continued growth forecasted in the resource sector we are optimistic about the potential for this project. It is also of significance that the first two completed units were purchased by another New Brunswick success story in the resource sector - Major Drilling.”
The Government of Canada, through ACOA’s Business Development Program and the Atlantic Investment Partnership, is contributing $532,100 to the two projects, while the Province of New Brunswick is providing a $1.68 million financial package. Sunny Corner Enterprises is investing $2,226,700.
