ACTIVE COMMUNITIES INC. HOSTS VOLUNTEER BOARD DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS
CHARLOTTETOWN, Prince Edward Island
Active Communities Inc. is hosting Volunteer Board Development Workshops for all regions in Prince Edward Island during February and March, thanks in part to investments made by the federal and provincial governments.
“Our Government is pleased to support the Volunteer Board Development Workshops,” said the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of National Revenue, on behalf of the Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and La Francophonie. “It is through initiatives like this, that we are able to strengthen rural communities and the local economy in Prince Edward Island.”
The Government of Canada, through ACOA, has invested $6,000 to support these workshops. The Government of Prince Edward Island, through Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development has invested an additional $6,000.
”This initiative complements the Rural Action Plan and is in response to a need identified by community groups,” said Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development Minister Ron MacKinley. “We encourage all volunteer groups that deal with community and economic development to participate in the workshops. Groups can register with a community development office in their area."
The series of workshops are being held across Prince Edward Island to assist economic development-based volunteer groups with the responsibilities and rewards of volunteering on a board. Attendees will gain knowledge, a set of resources and examples to improve their own volunteer board. The topics being covered in each session will be Basic Roles and Responsibilities, Effective Board Meetings and Recruitment and Retention. The workshops are designed to be attended in sequence for maximum benefit; however, workshops may be attended based on choice of topic.
“Our communities rely heavily on our volunteers to develop sustainable projects,” said Martina MacDonald, Executive Director, Active Communities Inc. “The challenges are often retention, roles, and effective meetings.
In this climate of busy lifestyles, we recognize the time is right to deliver this valuable training, the interest is certainly there.”
The three workshops will be held in the West, Central and Eastern regions of PEI. French workshops will be held in the area requested. For more information please contact the Community Development Officer in your area.
