17 January 2012, SHIPPAGAN, New Brunswick — The Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and La Francophonie, and the Honourable Paul Robichaud, Deputy Premier and Minister of Economic Development today announced major federal-provincial funding to upgrade the Town of Shippagan’s drinking water system and wastewater collection facilities.
“Our investment in upgrading Shippagan's wastewater collection system will address significant environmental and health and safety concerns. Moreover, it will give citizens access to a reliable and constant supply of drinking water year-round,” said Minister Valcourt, on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities. “Projects like this not only help to improve the quality of life of residents, but also allow communities to ensure their future economic development, which is the priority of our government.”
“Our investment will make a difference in the quality of the drinking water and the treatment of wastewater for the residents of Shippagan,” says Robichaud. “Our government works regularly in partnership with the federal government and municipalities to deliver real results like this important water and wastewater improvement project for the municipality.”
The governments of Canada and New Brunswick will each invest $718,820 in this project through the Building Canada Fund, Communities component. The Town of Shippagan, for its part, will invest $718,820. Currently, wastewater spills into the storm sewers and Shippagan Bay, threatening the local shellfish industry and causing backup problems for local businesses. Part of the project will involve improvements to the drinking water system. Funding for this project is contingent on completion of all contractual agreements, including pending Environmental Impact Assessment with the municipality.
“Through this partnership with two levels of government, the Town of Shippagan will continue to strategically develop in all forms, whether it's in health, safety, environmental and economic level," said Mayor Jonathan Roch Noël. "The town of Shippagan is proud to invest in its future for its citizens.”
