CALGARY — The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, delivered a keynote address today at a luncheon jointly hosted by the University of Calgary’s School of Public Policy and the Van Horne Institute.
“Our government's top priority is the economy,” said Minister Lebel. “Through effective policy and collaboration with the private sector, we can help to create an environment in which private business can succeed, creating jobs and ensuring conditions for long-term prosperity.”
In his address, the Minister discussed the Government of Canada's commitment to building a transportation system that responds to Canada's 21st-century needs. He also underlined the importance of having a transportation system that facilitates efficient and reliable movement of people and goods, which will in turn drive economic growth and position Canada more competitively on the world stage.
“While we’re busy integrating modes and systems, we must also continue to strengthen our commitment to partnership and collaboration,” added Minister Lebel. “And we're going to continue working with groups such as the University of Calgary and the Van Horne Institute so we can hear from academics and subject matter experts.”
Discussions and roundtables with transportation stakeholders are opportunities to deepen participants' understanding of how Canada's transportation system can be positioned to meet the key challenges that lie ahead.
Transport Canada has been a member of the Van Horne Institute for many years. The institute assists industry, government and the public in addressing issues affecting transportation, supply chain management and logistics. The School of Public Policy provides a practical, global and focused perspective on public policy analysis.
