Elmira, Ontario, January 27, 2012 – Motorists and pedestrians travelling through the Township of Woolwich will enjoy safer and smoother trips this winter thanks to a joint investment from the federal, provincial and municipal governments.
Snyder Avenue South, Samuel Street, Ann Street, portions of Riverside Drive West, portions of Herbert Street, portions of William Street, along with Florodale Road in the Township of Woolwich were each rehabilitated to improve transportation services for both vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Upgrades included reconstructing the roads' water, wastewater and storm water systems, expanding and replacing sidewalks, rebuilding road bases and installing new street lights. In addition, Florodale Road bridge was rehabilitated to improve its safety and structure.

said Harold Albrecht, Member of Parliament for Kitchener–Conestoga, on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities. "These investments in local infrastructure created local jobs and economic growth, and will enhance safety on our roadways."

said Mayor Todd Cowan of the Township of Woolwich. "The contributions from the Federal and Provincial governments along with Township funds made it possible to complete these needed infrastructure projects within a two year period."
The governments of Canada and Ontario each committed just over $2.1 million, or one-third of the total eligible costs, toward the three projects. The Township of Woolwich contributed the balance of the total project costs of $6.4 million.
The Government of Canada's support for this project comes from the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, part of Canada's Economic Action Plan. Thanks to Canada's Economic Action Plan and strong economic and financial fundamentals, the Canadian economy has recovered from the global recession better than most other industrialized countries. Canada has been a leader among G-7 countries throughout the recovery with nearly 600,000 net new jobs created since July 2009.
This project also supports Building Together, the Government of Ontario's long-term infrastructure plan to repair, rebuild and renew the province's roads and highways, bridges, public transit, schools and postsecondary institutions, hospitals and courthouses. Ontario is investing $12.8 billion in infrastructure projects in 2011-12, bringing the government's total infrastructure investments since 2003 to $75 billion. Building modern, efficient infrastructure has created or preserved close to 100,000 jobs each year, on average, making Ontario's economy more productive and improving quality of life, now and in the future.
