The Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) is investing $30,000 to assess the potential for renewable energy development on the Champagne and Aishihik First Nation's traditional territory in Yukon.
The Dakwakada Development Corporation will assess the economic and commercial viability of a mini-hydro project on the Kathleen River. It will also examine topographic maps of the Champagne and Aishihik First Nation's traditional territory to identify other potentially viable streams or rivers for mini-hydro projects.
A detailed analysis of wind data provided by Yukon Energy as well as modeling work will be used to identify where potentially economically viable wind power sites could be developed.
Dakwakada Development Corporation is a privately-held investment firm whose sole shareholder is the Champagne and Aishihik Trust, an organization that holds and manages investment and business assets of the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations based in Haines Junction, Yukon.
This investment is made possible through CanNor's Community Economic Opportunities Program which provides project-based support to First Nation and Inuit communities for community-based economic development.
