CanNor-11-023
Whitehorse, February 20, 2012 – The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) and Minister of Health today announced funding to assess the viability of commercial hydro-electric and wind-energy projects for the Champagne Aishihik First Nation.
“Identifying new sources of energy is important for sustainable economic development in our Northern communities,” said Minister Aglukkaq. “Clean energy to meet current needs and a growing demand from the resource sector can help create jobs and growth.”
“The Government of Canada is proud to invest in initiatives which support the participation of First Nations communities in economic development,” said Yukon MP Ryan Leef.
CanNor's investment will enable the Dakwakada Development Corporation (DDC) to assess data to determine the potential commercial viability of a mini-hydro project on the Kathleen River, and assess the potential of other rivers or streams on the Champagne Aishihik First Nation's territory. A detailed analysis will also be undertaken to identify possible wind-power development sites in the area.
“DDC is very pleased that CanNor recognizes the importance of potential renewable energy development in the CAFN Traditional Territory,” said Ray Wells, Chair, CAFN/DDC Renewable Energy Committee. “Our combined investments will enable DDC to move forward with the early stages of assessing commercial viability of wind and hydro. If these projects become viable they will help meet the growing needs for renewable energy in Yukon and provide economic benefits to DDC and CAFN.”
This investment is made possible through CanNor's Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) program, which focuses on long-term economic growth, economic diversification and capacity building in all three territories.
SINED is one of several economic development programs within CanNor. CanNor is responsible for coordinating and delivering Canada's economic development across the North, and for related policy development and research.
