Ottawa (Ontario), 7 February 2012 -- In February 2012, Parks Canada and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador will be holding community information sessions in Newfoundland and Labrador to present information on the nomination, designation, and protection of heritage lighthouses.
The Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act (HLPA) enables the designation and protection of federally owned lighthouses with significant heritage value. The Act depends on Canadians to support lighthouses by nominating them for designation through a petition.
The time to petition for heritage lighthouses is drawing to a close. Residents of Canada may nominate lighthouses for designation up to and including 29 May 2012 by forwarding a petition to Parks Canada.
