HAMILTON, ON (February 29, 2012) – The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) has developed an e-course to help new agricultural employees understand their health and safety responsibilities.
Orientation on Health and Safety for New Agricultural Workers, a free, two-part e-course, will provide participants with a general introduction to occupational health and safety for new agricultural workers.
Participants will gain knowledge of workers’ rights that are protected by health and safety legislation, understand the role of health and safety programs within a workplace; learn how to identify job-related hazards and how to work safely.
Orientation on Health and Safety for New Agricultural Workers will also provide guidance on hazards that are common to agricultural operations: working alone, violence, working with chemicals, slips and falls, lifting by hand, machinery and equipment, confined spaces, electricity, and handling animals.
Topics will include:
- Recognizing workplace hazards
- Occupational health and safety law
- General approaches to working safely
- Working safely – specific hazards
- Preparing for emergencies
- Who to ask for help
Orientation on Health and Safety for New Agricultural Workers was developed in partnership with the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association. All e-courses by CCOHS are available in English and French. They are developed by experts in the field and reviewed by labour, employer and government representatives. There are quizzes throughout and a certificate of completion is issued upon passing the exam. Case studies, quizzes, and an "ask a question" option are also featured. Funding for this e-course was provided by the Farm Credit Canada Ag Safety Fund, administered by the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association.
