Ottawa, February 14, 2012 — Art has many great names. Discover their stories on Tuesday, February 28 when the Canada Council for the Arts announces the eight winners of the 2012 Governor General's Awards in Visual and Media Arts. The $25,000 awards recognize career achievement in the visual and media arts by Canadian artists, as well as outstanding contributions to these fields. The winner of the Saidye Bronfman Award, which recognizes excellence in the fine crafts, will also be announced. The winners will be available for interviews after the news conference.

The celebration of Canada's finest artists continues in Ottawa in March with a week of events and on through June with a special exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada (NGC) in their honour.
The work of one laureate will be screening at TIFF Bell Lightbox, Reitman Square, 350 King Street West, Toronto, as part of The Free Screen, TIFF Cinematheque's ongoing showcase of independent and avant-garde media arts work. Admission is free. www.tiff.net/cinematheque.
Members of the media are invited to preview the exhibition organized by the NGC, 380 Sussex Drive, Ottawa, in celebration of the winners and their works. His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, will present the 2012 awards on Wednesday, March 28 at 6 pm at Rideau Hall, 1 Sussex Drive, Ottawa. In addition to a $25,000 prize, the winners will each receive a special issue medallion produced by the Royal Canadian Mint.
