Bay Bulls, Newfoundland and Labrador – Senator Fabian Manning, on behalf of Keith Ashfield, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans presented Mr. Donald Drew with a 2011 Small Craft Harbours Prix d’Excellence. Mr.7nbsp;Drew accepted his award last night at a ceremony in his home community of Bay Bulls, Newfoundland and Labrador.
“Our government is pleased to recognize Mr. Donald Drew for his significant contribution to the Bay Bulls harbour and the local community,” said Minister Ashfield. “He is an outstanding example of the many tireless volunteers who work so hard to manage fishing harbours across the country.”
Mr. Drew received this national award under the category of “Individual Commitment,” in recognition of his extraordinary dedication to the ongoing success of Bay Bulls Harbour. Mr. Drew has been Bay Bulls Harbour Authority President since the Harbour Authority was established in 1989, and is one of the longest-serving Harbour Authority volunteers in Eastern Canada. He is a mentor to other Harbour Authorities and, as Deputy Mayor of the Bay Bulls Town Council, an active member of his community.
“We recognize the importance of these small harbours for the thousands of families whose livelihoods depend on them,” said Senator Manning. “In recent years, we have made the largest investments in small craft harbours in a generation and we are working to ensure a sustainable future for Canada’s commercial fishery.”
The Prix d’Excellence is awarded annually to celebrate the exemplary contributions made by harbour authorities to small craft harbours across Canada. The award recognizes teams and individuals who have made significant contributions to their harbours and their communities.
