PORT HARDY, BRITISH COLUMBIA — The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, and Member of Parliament for Vancouver Island North, today announced a runway pavement resurfacing project for the Port Hardy Airport.
“Regional airports connect local economies with markets, and rural residents with the rest of Canada and the world,” said Minister Duncan. “This project will ensure that the Port Hardy Airport continues to serve as an important link for residents, local businesses, trade and tourism in northern Vancouver Island, and plays a key role in the region’s economy for many years to come.”
“Our government’s top priority remains the economy,” added the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities. “Investing in this airport will create jobs and economic growth for northern Vancouver Island communities.”
The project includes repaving the main runway, taxiway “B” aprons, public parking lot and main roads at the airport.
“This project is great news for Port Hardy and the North Island region,” said Port Hardy Mayor Bev Parnham. “The Port Hardy Airport is a freight and passenger hub that provides essential support for our business community and is key to our regional economy.”
A contract will go out to public tender and the project cost will be known once the public tendering process has been completed. The resurfacing is tentatively scheduled to begin in May 2012, and work will be scheduled to minimize the impact on the airport’s regular activities.
Port Hardy Airport is owned and operated by Transport Canada and is located on the northern end of Vancouver Island, approximately 300 kilometres from Vancouver. The airport operations include daily passenger service to Vancouver and local flights to rural locations up and down the west coast of British Columbia.
