OTTAWA, ONTARIO (March 28, 2012) — The Honourable John Duncan, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, and the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, announced today the transfer of three components of the Aboriginal People’s Program (APP) from Canadian Heritage to Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC), effective April 1, 2012.
“Canada’s young and growing urban Aboriginal population is integral to our country’s economic growth,” said Minister Duncan. “Today’s announcement will allow greater focus and coordination of federal efforts to support urban and off-reserve Aboriginal people becoming full participants in the Canadian economy.”
The Aboriginal Friendship Centre Program (AFCP) , Cultural Connections for Aboriginal Youth (CCAY) and Young Canada Works for Aboriginal Urban Youth (YCWAUY) will be transferred to Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada at existing funding levels.
