REGINA, SK — On behalf of the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women, Mr. Tom Lukiwski, Member of Parliament (Regina-Lumsden-Lake Centre) and Parliamentary Secretary to the Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, today announced Government of Canada support for a project that addresses the priority of ending violence against women and girls.
"Our Government is committed to eliminating violence against women and girls in communities across Canada," said Minister Ambrose. "This project will help ensure that women who are vulnerable to violence and abuse will have increased access to community resources."
"I am pleased that this Government of Canada funded project will provide a way for organizations to work together in meeting the needs of women who are newcomers in Regina, and who need support when responding to violence," said Mr. Lukiwski.
The Regina Immigrant Women's Centre is receiving $236,424 from the Women's Program of Status of Women Canada for its 36-month project Violence Prevention for Immigrant Women: Safe Planning Interventions. This project will develop, implement and share culturally sensitive protocols and training modules for agencies in Regina that work to prevent violence against women.
"The Government of Canada's support for this project will directly assist immigrant and refugee women who may be affected by family violence, and help them move towards a violence free life," said Gabrielle Henry, President of the Regina Immigrant Women Centre.
The Regina Immigrant Women's Centre is a non-profit, community-based organization. Since 1984, it has offered culturally sensitive support services and programs for immigrant women and their families.
Status of Women Canada works to advance equality for women, with emphasis on increasing women's economic security, advancing women in leadership and decision-making roles, and eliminating violence against women and girls.
Since 2007, Status of Women Canada has approved more than $49 million in projects designed to help end violence against women and girls across the country. The Government's support for community-based projects has nearly doubled since 2006-2007, from $10.8 million to close to $19 million, its highest level ever.
