Today, Robert Sopuck, Member of Parliament for Dauphin—Swan River—Marquette on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, joined Glen McKenzie, Mayor of Swan River, to formally turn sod and kick-off construction of the Swan Valley Recreation and Wellness Centre.
The Government of Canada is contributing $2.4 M dollars towards this project under the Building Canada Fund–Communities Component, and the Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund. The Town of Swan River is providing a total of $7.0 M dollars.
"Our Government is pleased to support the Swan Valley Recreation and Wellness Centre," said MP Sopuck. "This new facility will create jobs and economic opportunities while providing greater access to health and leisure activities for the people of Swan River and the surrounding area."
When complete the new 17,500 square foot community facility will be home to an aquatic centre featuring a 4-lane 25 metre pool, a leisure pool with gradual entry, a lazy river, numerous spray features and family change rooms, and a viewing terrace with the possibility of future expansion.
"The Town of Swan River is excited to have the Recreation & Wellness Centre Project move forward," said Mayor Glen McKenzie. "A great many people have put a lot of time and effort into this project and they are to be commended for their efforts."
Canada’s investment in this project will provide residents of the Swan Valley area better access to local health and leisure activities, while stimulating the economy, creating local jobs, and improving the quality of life of families.
Construction of the centre is expected to be complete by late 2012.
