OTTAWA, Ontario, March 9, 2012 — Canada's Public Safety Minister, Vic Toews, today released his decision regarding the request by Mr. Robert Goulet, under the International Transfer of Offenders Act, to serve his remaining sentence in Canada.
"Upon careful review of Mr. Goulet's case and the information presented in his application for transfer, it is my opinion that there is a significant risk that he would commit a criminal organization offence after his return," said Minister Toews. "As a result, I am denying Mr. Goulet's application for transfer to Canada."
Under the International Transfer of Offenders Act, the Minister of Public Safety is responsible for the administration of the Act and is the sole authority for decisions.
This decision follows a January 19, 2012 Federal Court of Canada decision that the Minister reconsider his earlier denial of Mr. Goulet's application.
