[Lift bridge fully opened to allow commercial vessels into Hamilton Harbour]

HAMILTON, Ontario, April 18, 2012 – Yesterday evening the Burlington Canal Lift Bridge was fully raised and ships may now pass through safely. The bridge will remain in the raised position until its condition has been assessed. The bridge remains closed to all road traffic.
At 9:40 a.m. on April 17, a mechanical malfunction occurred on the Burlington Canal Lift Bridge. A steel cable on the auxiliary counterweight broke and halted the bridge at an altitude of approximately 80 feet. At this time, it is difficult to assess how long it will take to complete the repairs, but it may be several days before full operations resume.
As the situation is assessed, updates will be posted.
