Okanagan Falls, British Columbia—Today, the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada’s Labour Minister, and Dan Albas, Member of Parliament for Okanagan—Coquihalla, met with Unit Electrical Engineering Ltd. employees to discuss an important initiative from the Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan 2012, which will help protect employees’ long-term disability benefits.
“Our government is committed to protecting workers’ long-term disability benefits when their employers go bankrupt,” said Minister Raitt. “By introducing this initiative, our government will ensure that, within its jurisdiction, long-term disability benefits that have been promised to employees are there when they need them the most.”
The Government will introduce legislation that will require federally regulated private-sector employers to insure, on a go-forward basis, their employees’ long-term disability plans. This measure will further protect workers in the case of employer bankruptcy.
This initiative complements the support provided to Canadian workers through the Wage Earner Protection Program, which provides timely compensation to employees who are owed wages, vacation, severance or termination pay when their employers go bankrupt.
