Prime Minister Stephen Harper today met with Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, on the margins of the Summit of the Americas. Prime Minister Harper highlighted the close ties between Canada and Trinidad & Tobago, and both leaders looked forward to the upcoming visit of Governor General David Johnston to Trinidad & Tobago in early May, to mark the 50th anniversary of our vibrant bilateral relationship.
The two leaders expressed satisfaction at the growing trade and investment ties between Canada and Trinidad & Tobago, noting the potential for continued expansion, notably in the oil and gas sector. The Prime Minister welcomed the support of Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar for progress in the trade negotiations towards a trade agreement between Canada and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). The leaders also discussed the regional security situation, and Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar thanked Canada for its significant contributions in the police and justice reform sectors.
