Today's event celebrated the 15th anniversary of the building of the Confederation Bridge as well as the completion of three components of the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) project: a digital radio communication system, 511 service, and lighting upgrades to the bridge.
The remaining components of the ITS project on the Confederation Bridge include a toll plaza with transponder lane enhancements and electronic lane improvements; dynamic messaging and signage improvements and the installation of an incident detection system; as well as the installation of computer assisted tiltmeters (bridge load monitoring technology) for the bridge monitoring system.
The projects that have been completed to date include the roadway lighting project, which replaced existing bridge light fixtures with low-maintenance, weather-resistant LED fixtures, in addition to other safety related upgrades, which included the commissioning of a traffic information system (511 service) and a digital radio system.
The total eligible cost of the ITS project is approximately $2.68 million, of which the Government of Canada will fund up to $1.34 million through the Gateways and Border Crossings Fund. Strait Crossing Bridge Limited, the private company that operates and maintains the bridge, will be funding the remaining $1.34 million.
