(Chapter 1—Spring 2012 Report of the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development)
Ottawa, 8 May 2012—The federal government has not complied with the Kyoto Protocol Implementation Act passed by Parliament in 2007, says Scott Vaughan, Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development, in his report tabled today in the House of Commons. The government announced in December 2011 that it would withdraw from Canada’s Kyoto Protocol commitments, but the Act is still in effect and the Commissioner is still required to report on the government’s climate change plan of 2011.
The report notes that while the climate change plans prepared by Environment Canada have improved since 2007, they did not include all the measures needed to meet the greenhouse gas emission reduction targets adopted by Canada under the Kyoto Protocol.
