OTTAWA – Thanks to INTERPOL partners across the Globe, a wanted fugitive who has been on the run since 2009 is now behind bars.
Iain Kenneth Smy was arrested in 2009 by members of Brandon Police Service in connection with sexual assaults committed in Brandon, Manitoba between 1984 and 1986. The victims have been identified as males between the ages of 11 and 16 years of age.
After his arrest, Smy was released on bail however, failed to attend court and it was suspected that he had fled the country. Brandon Police Service requested that the Manitoba Integrated Warrant Apprehension Unit locate Smy. After an investigation, it was confirmed that he had indeed left Canada and fled to Europe.
INTERPOL Ottawa, acting on a request from the Brandon Police Service, issued a Red Notice for Iain Kenneth Smy on June 28, 2011. With the help of RCMP’s INTERPOL Partners investigators were able to track Smy’s travels while he was outside of Canada. On April 30, 2012, INTERPOL National Central Bureau Madrid coordinated with the Spanish National Police in order to locate and arrest Smy at a residence in Malaga, Spain.
“One victim is too many,” said Inspector Glenn Martindale, Director of RCMP INTERPOL Ottawa. “International cooperation between INTERPOL partners is crucial to supporting the Canadian law enforcement community and ensuring the security of Canadians at home and abroad.”
Smy has been detained at a remand facility in Madrid, while an application for his extradition is made. He is expected to be returned to Manitoba where he will appear before the Courts to answer to the charges.
