OTTAWA, May 25, 2012 - The Royal Canadian Mounted Police’s National Missing Children Operations (NMCO) commemorates National Missing Children’s Day by showcasing long-term missing children cases with the help of elementary school students at the Good Shepherd Elementary School, in Ottawa.
National Missing Children’s Day is held on May 25 of each year and draws attention to the thousands of children who go missing. On this day, we commemorate missing children who have been found, and highlight the continued efforts to find those who are still missing.
“Our Government takes the safety of its citizens very seriously, particularly when it comes to the most vulnerable members of society – our children,” said Canada’s Public Safety Minister, Vic Toews. “There is no greater fear for a parent than the possibility of a missing child. Today is an important day to remember not only children who have gone missing, but also their loved ones. I want to thank all police officers who work tirelessly to keep our children and our communities safe and secure.”
This year, students from various school boards of the National Capital Region participated in the event by presenting long standing cases of missing children in the hopes of obtaining new information from the public that could generate new investigative avenues for these cases and help bring these children home. A total of 9 cases of missing kids from across Canada were profiled.
“The RCMP is committed to working in collaboration with our law enforcement partners to help bring our missing children home. Police Officers from across the country continue their investigative efforts; we have not forgotten these children and their families,” said RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson.
The NMCO, a division of the National Centre for Missing Persons and Unidentified Remains, is a national service created to help prevent child abductions, find missing children, and assist law enforcement agencies, and non-governmental organizations dedicated to finding missing children, through partnership and collective dedication.
