In 2012, the United Nations marks the International Year of Co-operatives. Today, on International Day of Co-operatives, we have the chance to recognize and celebrate the important role co-operatives play in economic development and social innovation around the world.
Co-operatives are distinct from other business enterprises because the people they serve control the organization. The purpose of co-operatives is not to maximize profit for shareholders but to meet the common needs of their members.
In developing countries, co-operatives make a significant difference in many communities. The co-operative movement recognizes that small businesses and small landholder farmers are the backbone of economies in most developing countries. Often, the Government of Canada works with Canadian co-operatives to help local communities in need around the world.
In the International Year of Co-operatives, Canadians can be proud of their contribution to improving the lives of women, men, and children in developing countries through our Government, and of the practical help offered by Canadian-based development co-operatives.
