Québec (Quebec), July 30, 2012 – Acting on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, Jacques Gourde, Member of Parliament for Lotbinière–Chutes-de-la-Chaudière, today joined Patrick Huot, Member of the National Assembly for Vanier and Parliamentary Assistant to the Chair of the Conseil du Trésor, acting on behalf of Laurent Lessard, Quebec Minister of Municipal Affairs, Regions and Land Occupancy, in announcing that the City of Québec will receive up to $5,333,332 in joint government funding under the Large Urban Centres Component of the Building Canada Fund–Quebec for the expansion of Lebourgneuf community centre in the city’s Des Rivières borough.
“Our communities across the country need to be able to count on quality public infrastructure to ensure their development and meet the growing recreational needs of their residents. Once expanded, Lebourgneuf community centre will become an important lever of development and help further the City of Québec’s cultural and sports vitality. In supporting this project, the Government of Canada is demonstrating once again its firm commitment to improving quality of life in our communities,” said Jacques Gourde.
“The Government of Quebec is proud to lend its support to the expansion of Lebourgneuf community centre. In the end, this project will ensure the Des Rivières borough is equipped with a modern community, sports and cultural complex that meets the needs of young people and families from the Lebourgneuf district and nearby neighbourhoods. As MNA, that has always been one of my priorities,” added Patrick Huot.
The proposed project involves adding an approximately 1,400 square-metre extension to the existing Lebourgneuf community centre to house, among other things, a gymnasium, locker rooms and community halls. The initiative also calls for exterior improvements, including enlarging the parking lot, building a bus docking zone and carrying out landscaping work. Once completed, the new Lebourgneuf community, sports and cultural complex will meet the needs expressed by residents of the borough for greater facilities for the practice of various indoor sports.
Completion of this initiative will require an investment currently estimated at $8,000,000, based on the project’s eligible costs. The governments of Quebec and Canada will each contribute up to $2,666,666, for a total in joint government funding that could reach $5,333,332, while the City of Québec will also invest up to $2,666,668 in the project, in accordance with present requirements.
The Large Urban Centres Component of the Building Canada Fund-Quebec is a cost-sharing initiative to finance infrastructure projects in Quebec municipalities of 100,000 inhabitants or more. These communities can use this financial assistance to revitalize such public infrastructure as water treatment plants, water supply systems and cultural and sports centres.
