Pinsent’s Arm, Newfoundland and Labrador – The Honourable Peter Penashue, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, President of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada and Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador, announced today, on behalf of the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, that a wharf reconstruction project will be carried out at the small craft harbour in Pinsent’s Arm, Labrador.
“Our Government understands that the fishing industry needs safe, efficient harbours,” said Minister Penashue. “I am pleased to announce that a wharf will be reconstructed for commercial fishers in Pinsent’s Arm as part of the government’s Small Craft Harbours Program. With this project, we are investing in the future of the local fishing industry. ”
For the project, the existing marginal wharf near the fish processing plant will be removed and replaced with a treated timber cribwork wharf and service area. As well, a retaining structure will be constructed to protect the service area behind the marginal wharf. Rock fill will be placed between the new wharf and the new retaining structure. The new wharf will be topped with a concrete deck and a layer of gravel will be placed over the rock fill. This will create more than 500 square metres of operating space for harbour users. Work is expected to commence within a few weeks and be complete by August 31, 2013.
Repair and improvement projects are undertaken at harbours across the country by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, as part of its Small Craft Harbours Program, in cooperation with the local harbour authorities that manage and operate facilities for local users. Close cooperation between the Department and harbour authorities allows the federal government to continue to provide an operable system of harbours and facilities throughout Canada in support of commercial fish harvesters.
