Ottawa, Ontario, August 16, 2012—The Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of Industry, Minister of State (Agriculture) and Minister responsible for the Competition Tribunal, today announced the appointment of Donald G. McFetridge as a lay member of the Tribunal, effective June 21, 2012.
"Mr. McFetridge has over thirty-five years of experience with industrial economics, regulatory economics and competition policy that will be greatly beneficial to the Tribunal," said Minister Paradis. "His expertise in these areas will help the Tribunal render decisions on complex matters such as mergers and competition."
In addition to being Professor Emeritus in the Department of Economics at Carleton University, Mr. McFetridge is a former holder of the T.D. MacDonald Chair in Industrial Economics at the Competition Bureau and former Chair of the Economics and Law Committee of the National Competition Law Section of the Canadian Bar Association.
Mr. McFetridge obtained his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Toronto as well as a Master of Science from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
The Competition Tribunal is a specialized tribunal that hears and decides all applications made under Parts VII.1 and VIII of the Competition Act as informally and quickly as the circumstances and consideration of fairness allow. The Tribunal is a strictly adjudicative body that operates independently of any government department.
