OTTAWA – The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, announced today the awarding of a contract to Marcrest Construction Limited of Burlington, Ontario for the upgrade of infrastructure at Land Force Central Area Training Centre (LFCA TC) Meaford.
“Our government is committed to supporting our men and women in uniform. Through today’s announcement, we are ensuring the Canadian Forces have the facilities they need to support training for operations,” said Minister MacKay. “This announcement is not only positive for the Canadian Forces but also for Ontario industry who will complete the work and create jobs for Canadians over the coming months.”
This $1.2 million project will see upgrades made to building M-207, a three-story barrack block which is primarily used to house soldiers and equipment. This building was constructed in 1993, and is capable of housing up to 492 soldiers.
“I am proud of the investments our Government is making to infrastructure at Meaford, and at bases and wings across the country,” said Larry Miller, Member of Parliament for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound.
Work commenced on this project in July 2012 and is expected to be completed by the year’s end. The project is managed for the Department of National Defence by Defence Construction Canada, a Crown corporation accountable to Public Works and Government Services Canada.
“As we at Meaford invest in the training of our soldiers, this too is an investment in the infrastructure upon which we rely,” said Lieutenant-Colonel William Cummings, the commanding officer of LFCA TC Meaford.
LFCA TC Meaford is the main training site for Land Force Central Area (LFCA), the subordinate command of the Canadian Army focused on Ontario. It is located in Grey County, Ontario, northwest of the town of Meaford and approximately 25-km east of Owen Sound, Ontario. The training centre employs approximately 400 people, military and civilian and will regularly see up to 1,100 primary reserve and regular force soldiers use the facility during the summer training months.
In line with the Canada First Defence Strategy, there is a need to update and replace dated defence infrastructure in order to meet the challenges of the 21st century. The Government of Canada conducted an open, fair, and transparent competitive process to award this contract.
