Ottawa, August 15, 2012 — The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, issued the following statement recognizing National Acadian Day:
“Today, Acadians will celebrate their history, language and culture on National Acadian Day.
“Established by the first National Acadian Convention in 1881, August 15 also coincides with the Catholic observance of Assumption Day. Otherwise known as the feast day of the Assumption of Mary, it is believed that on this day the Virgin Mary, patron saint of the Acadians, ascended directly into Heaven following her death.
“For all Canadians, today provides an excellent opportunity to appreciate the achievements and contributions of the Acadian people. The Acadians have long contributed to our country’s rich and diverse heritage and history, and they represent an important part of our country’s Francophone community.
“In the face of the hardships they endured during the “Great Upheaval” between 1755 and 1763, Acadians were able to preserve their heritage, religion and language. Today, I encourage Canadians across the country to learn more about the culture and traditions of this proud and determined people.
“As Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, I extend my best wishes to Acadians across Canada. May you enjoy a happy and festive National Acadian Day.”
