August 3, 2012 - The Honourable Diane Ablonczy, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas and Consular Affairs), will travel to Kingston, Jamaica, to participate in celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the country’s independence on August 6, 2012.
“On behalf of all Canadians, I would like to extend congratulations to the government and people of Jamaica as they celebrate 50 years of independence,” said Minister of State Ablonczy. “Canada is proud to also commemorate 50 years of strong diplomatic relations between our nations, relations that are based on our shared Commonwealth history, significant political and commercial links, and extensive people-to-people ties.”
Jamaica is an important partner in Canada’s strategy of engagement with the Americas. The two countries are working together to tackle security challenges in the hemisphere and pursue opportunities for mutual economic growth. This cooperation is further strengthened by the valuable contributions to Canadian society made by Jamaican-Canadians in areas such as business, politics, sports and the arts.
“In the spirit of our continuing friendship, Canada congratulates Jamaica on this important occasion,” said Minister of State Ablonczy.
