Longueuil, Quebec, August 29, 2012 — Before one of their shows this summer, three of Simple Plan's band members recorded a send-off video message for Canadian Space Agency (CSA) astronaut Chris Hadfield who is scheduled to blast off in December for a 6-month stay aboard the International Space Station (ISS). During the second half of the mission, he will become Canada's first Commander of the ISS.
Music will be an integral part of Hadfield's mission. A musician himself, Hadfield will spend much of his free time in space playing and recording music. In response to drummer Chuck Comeau who said: "We have a deal, you need to play the song", Hadfield agreed to play Simple Plan's "Astronaut" while in space. The song is the third single released from the "Get your Heart On" album.
The video message also features Chris 2D, a cut-out of Hadfield that is travelling the planet as part of the Chris Hadfield World Tour Photo Challenge, the CSA's first ever photo contest.
The Canadian Space Agency launched the Web-based Chris Hadfield World Tour Photo Challenge this summer, inviting Canadians on business trips, family vacations, visiting their local science centre or doing daily activities to post photos using a Chris 2D cut-out or by adding Hadfield into their existing pictures using a tool provided on the Website. The picture with the most votes wins a private webcast with Chris Hadfield. The top 5 pictures will win an autographed mission shirt. The contest runs until Hadfield is scheduled to land on May 16, 2013.
