Prime Minister Stephen Harper today congratulated the Canadian Women’s Soccer Team on their bronze medal win over France at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London.
"Our country is extremely proud of the Canadian Women’s Soccer Team. They are a great team, they had a great run and, as true Olympians, they overcame adversity to earn a position on the podium," said Prime Minister Harper. "The efforts by captain Christine Sinclair and the rest of the team can only be described as heroic."
The Canadian Women’s Soccer Team trains out of Vancouver, British Columbia. This is their first Olympic medal and Canada’s first team medal in the Summer Olympics since the men’s basketball team won silver in 1936.
The 2012 Summer Olympic Games are being held from July 27 to August 12 in London, United Kingdom. Canada is being represented by more than 275 athletes who are competing in a 26 sport program scheduled around London. More than 10,500 athletes, coaches and team officials from at least 200 countries are participating in these Summer Olympic Games.
