Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement today upon learning of the death of Meles Zenawi, Prime Minister of Ethiopia:
"It is with regret that I learned today of the death of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi of Ethiopia.
"Prime Minister Meles led his country into the ranks of the fastest growing economies in Africa. I know from our attendance together at high-level meetings, including the G-8 Summit in Muskoka and most recently at the G-20 in Los Cabos, that he was deeply committed to achieving poverty reduction and food security in Ethiopia.
"On behalf of the Government of Canada and all Canadians, I extend my sincere condolences to his wife, Mrs. Azeb Mesfin, their children, and to the government and people of Ethiopia."
