Backgrounder - CanNor Invests in Yukon Forest Industry

The Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) is investing $400,000 in a forest/vegetation inventory in south central Yukon. An updated inventory addresses a number of issues including forest growth and disturbance, increased land use interests for resource development, regulatory changes and upcoming land and forest management planning processes.
As well as providing valuable information to the Yukon Government Forest Management Branch, a new forest/vegetation inventory will also provide important information to a number of industry sectors and stakeholders to support economic development and resource management planning in the Yukon. These include:
- forest industry – to develop and implement timber harvest plans and silviculture activities;
- energy industry – to make economic development decisions for the biomass industry for various energy and heating projects;
- First Nation governments – to develop and manage settled lands;
- wildland fire management – to predict forest fire behavior, determine fire risk zones and develop fire smart programs.
- mining industry – to support feasibility studies, development work and socio-environmental assessment work;
- land use planning commissions – to assist in land use decisions and provide certainty for development opportunities;
- tourism sector– to identify special areas for tourism development;
- Yukon Environmental and Socio-Economic Assessment Board – to assist with assessments for all sectors to help make recommendations on mitigations and determine effects;
- natural resource consultants – to be used during assessments, modeling and evaluations; and
- researchers – to find suitable sites to study, carry out experiments and to plan more detailed work.
This investment is made possible through CanNor's Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) Program. SINED is one of several economic development programs within CanNor. CanNor is responsible for coordinating and delivering Canada's economic development across the North, and for related policy development, research and advocacy.
