Ottawa, September 27, 2012—The Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State (Science and Technology), today welcomed the release of a report by the Council of Canadian Academies (CCA) on the state of science and technology (S&T) in Canada. The report builds on the CCA's previous work and is an impressive and thorough examination of the state of Canadian S&T. Among the key findings was that Canada's scientific research enterprise was ranked fourth highest in the world in a survey of over 5,000 leading international researchers.
"This evidence-based assessment paints a great picture of Canada's continued strength and growth in science and technology," said Minister of State Goodyear. "Our government's investments have attracted some of the world's brightest minds from abroad, resulting in Canada being recognized as punching well above its weight in a highly competitive world. Canadian scientists should take pride in this excellent worldwide reputation. I would like to thank the panel for their work on this assessment."
The 18-member expert panel was chaired by Dr. Eliot Phillipson, Sir John and Lady Eaton Professor of Medicine Emeritus, University of Toronto. The report's focus is on research performed in the higher education, not-for-profit and government sectors.
