CHECK AGAINST DELIVERY
I am delighted to be with you today for this celebration of service and excellence in scouting.
As governor general and as chief scout, I would like to start by saying how proud I am to wear the national neckerchief and the Vanier Medal. These are symbols of the ideal to which you aspire as scouts and as supporters of scouting in Canada.
And what is that ideal? Put simply, the well-being of our children and young people.
I can think of few more worthy goals for any organization, and the means by which you pursue this goal helps explain why scouting remains relevant more than 100 years after its inception.
Adventure, outdoor experience, friendship and the learning of practical skills—these are timeless and wonderfully effective ways of building confidence and ability.
Young people have such energy, curiosity and resolve to change the world for the better.
As the great humanitarian Jean Vanier put it:
“In the hearts of the young a fantastic call exists, a desire for peace, a desire for tolerance, an openness, and a compassion.”
As a father and grandfather, I know how much we can learn from children and young people. And I know how much they want to learn from us. That’s what makes scouting such a wonderful experience—the learning is constant. It is fun and practical, and it builds a sense of camaraderie that is very precious.
As governor general, I have called on Canadians to join in the building of a smarter, more caring nation. And to help get us there, I have been focusing on our need to support families and children; to reinforce learning and innovation; and to encourage philanthropy and volunteerism.
Thanks to the members and supporters of the Association des Scouts du Canada, a whole new generation of leaders and activists is being prepared to engage in our society, and to strengthen these pillars.
I also want to mention next year’s international gathering of scouts at the 14th World Scout Moot, hosted by Canada. This event will offer a wonderful opportunity to connect with scouts from around the world, and to serve as ambassadors for this country.
Scouts and scout leaders, you are doing the work today that will strengthen Canada and the world of tomorrow. And that is why I am so pleased to recognize your efforts with these decorations today.
Congratulations to all of you on what you have achieved. I look forward to hearing of your contributions for years to come.
Thank you.
