The Honourable Jim Flaherty, Minister of Finance, today announced new tariff relief for Canadian manufacturers to foster jobs and growth. This relief is expected to save Canadian businesses about $1.7 million annually.
“This initiative builds on our Government’s commitment to make Canada a tariff-free zone for industrial manufacturers—the first country in the G-20 to do so,” said Minister Flaherty. “This tariff relief will lower costs for Canadian businesses, enhancing their competitiveness in domestic and international markets, and fostering jobs and growth.”
The Government is eliminating customs duties on certain products in the following categories:
- Palm oil flakes for use in the manufacture of food products;
- Trays designed to hold discs for use in the manufacture of CD or DVD cases;
- Fabric shells for use in the manufacture of bed linens such as duvets, comforters, featherbeds, cushions and pillows;
- Crossing pieces for guard rails; and
- Certain chassis and motors for use in the manufacture of ambulances.
Since 2009, the Harper Government has eliminated tariffs on more than 1,800 tariff items and provided more than $435 million in annual tariff relief to Canadian businesses.
More information on today’s tariff relief appears in the October 10 edition of the Canada Gazette, Part II.
