OTTAWA, October 11, 2012 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Starbucks Coffee Canada Inc. are warning the public not to consume the peanut butter product described below because it may be contaminated with Salmonella.
The affected product, Justin's brand Honey Peanut Butter Blend, is a 0.5 oz pouch bearing UPC 894455000391 and a Best By date between 07-14-13 and 08-30-13.
This peanut butter pouch was incorporated in Starbucks brand Protein Bistro Box kits, 192 g packages bearing UPC 7 62111 88794 8 and a Best Before date from 12SE29 to 12OC07, inclusively.
The Starbucks Protein Bistro Boxes containing the affected peanut butter pouches were distributed nationally.
There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.
Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with these bacteria may cause salmonellosis, a foodborne illness. In young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems, salmonellosis may cause serious and sometimes deadly infections. In otherwise healthy people, salmonellosis may cause short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.
The retailer, Starbucks Coffee Canada Inc., Toronto, Ontario, is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
