Ottawa, Ontario, October 23, 2012—Today, the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada’s Labour Minister, congratulated Garda Security Screening Inc. and General Teamsters on ratifying collective agreements at the Edmonton International Airport, the Grande Prairie Airport and the Lloydminster Airport.
“I am very pleased that Garda Security Screening Inc. and General Teamsters have worked closely together to reach these agreements,” said Minister Raitt. “Cooperative labour‑management relations benefit the economic prosperity and, in this case, the security of Canadians.”
General Teamsters Local Union 362 independently represents some 250 employees at the Edmonton International Airport, about 15 employees at the Grande Prairie Airport and about five employees at the Lloydminster Airport. These employees are responsible for the airport security screening of passengers, non-passengers and baggage.
Garda is the largest provider of pre-screening services for the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA). Earlier this month, Garda Security Screening Inc. and General Teamsters ratified agreements for employees working at the Calgary International Airport and the Medicine Hat Airport.
The agreements were reached with assistance from the Labour Program’s Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. The Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service provides dispute resolution and dispute prevention assistance to trade unions and employers under the jurisdiction of the Canada Labour Code.
