Hamilton, Ontario, October 20, 2012 – Stoney Creek and east Hamilton residents can now enjoy a new state-of-the-art aquatic and multi-purpose complex. The new Stoney Creek Recreation Centre, located on the site of the Stoney Creek Arena, has created a hub of recreation facilities with a variety of programs for residents of all ages.
"Families and seniors here in Stoney Creek will benefit tremendously thanks to the expansion of this key community resource,"
said Dean Allison, Member of Parliament for Niagara West–Glanbrook. "Our Government is proud to invest in local infrastructure improvements that create jobs and build strong, healthy and prosperous communities."
"Our government is investing in projects like this one to stimulate the economy, create jobs and provide strong, sustainable infrastructure for our communities,"
said the Honourable Ted McMeekin, Member of Provincial Parliament for Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Westdale. "This infrastructure project will ensure that families and their children can enjoy a range of activities in a dynamic community hub for many years to come."
"What the new Stoney Creek Recreation Centre has become is a great asset for the community,"
said City of Hamilton Mayor Bob Bratina. "We are extremely proud to offer residents new opportunities like this Centre to stay active and healthy."
The new Stoney Creek Recreation Centre will deliver numerous benefits for residents. The entire facility has been designed to be a barrier-free facility, including the land and leisure pools, youth program space and senior program space. The new centre also features new change rooms, administrative spaces, and a group exercise classroom that will help residents of all ages maintain healthy active lives.
The Government of Canada contributed $2.73 million and the Province of Ontario is contributing up to $4.33 million through the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund. The City of Hamilton contributed the balance of the total project cost of $13 million.
The Government of Canada has engaged provinces, territories, municipalities and key stakeholders in a series of roundtables to guide the development of a new long-term infrastructure plan that will support job creation, economic growth and prosperity. We have heard that we are on the right track: there is a need for strong, sustained investment and we must continue to work together moving forward. To improve infrastructure across Canada and ensure affordability and sustainability over the long term, our new plan will encourage greater use of public-private partnerships. This will help leverage new investments in infrastructure, while respecting the capacity of Canadian taxpayers.
This project also supports Building Together, the Government of Ontario's long-term infrastructure plan to repair, rebuild and renew the province's roads and highways, bridges, public transit, schools and postsecondary institutions, hospitals and courthouses. Since 2003, Ontario has invested approximately $75 billion in infrastructure. Building modern, efficient infrastructure has created or preserved close to 100,000 jobs each year, on average, making Ontario's economy more productive and improving quality of life, now and in the future.
