Backgrounder – CanNor Invests in Adult Basic Education in the Yukon

The Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) is investing over $4.2 million over four years through the Northern Adult Basic Education Program (NABEP) to enhance adult basic education programming in the Yukon. The program will be delivered by Yukon College.
Working closely with education directors from Yukon's 14 First Nations, Yukon College has identified a number of key initiatives that will be incorporated into new adult basic education (ABE) programming across the territory, including:
- creating culturally relevant tools that will assess 'prior learning' to recognize the knowledge gained by individuals through life and learning experiences;
- integrating life skills into its new programming to help people make better decisions about their education and career goals;
- providing a comprehensive and integrated approach to learning through cooperation with First Nation government departments, community agencies, and other support networks;
- enhancing community programming to better prepare students to access local labour market opportunities specifically in the trades, mining, and environmental training; and
- enhancing delivery of college preparatory courses to adult learners so more Yukoners can access post-secondary programs and employment opportunities.
Yukon College will work in partnership with relevant stakeholders including First Nation governments, literacy service providers and employers to introduce programming and build capacity that will significantly improve the literacy and employability skills of Yukoners. With a strong emphasis on rural programming, each of the projects will uniquely respond to the social and economic realities of the region in which it takes place.
This investment is made possible through CanNor's Northern Adult Basic Education Program (NABEP). NABEP is one of several economic development programs within CanNor. CanNor delivers on its exclusive northern mandate through funding programs, providing project management services, leveraging the federal role in the CanNor, serving as a champion for northern interests, and undertaking policy and research.
