Backgrounder - CanNor Invests in Nunavut's Tourism Sector

The Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) is investing $105,100 to assist the Hamlet of Arviat build its local tourism capacity. The investment will support the Arviat Community Ecotourism (ACE) initiative, which was developed in 2009 as a grassroots project to involve local individuals and small businesses to create a sustainable community-based tourism enterprise.
Specifically, CanNor funding is supporting year four of the ACE program, with the following components:
- Ecoguide Training - A three week intensive training program by a certified wilderness guide to teach local students essential guiding and outfitting skills in order to take visitors out on the land.
- Cooking and Caring for Visitors Training – Hands-on training modules for local students to build knowledge and skills to deliver quality tourism food services.
- ACE Travel Trade Marketing – Tourism marketing and outreach, including trade missions nationally and abroad to develop partnerships between the Hamlet and a range of domestic and international tour operators, wholesalers, and destination management companies.
- Wildlife Viewing Cabin – A portable cabin will be constructed for use in day trip wildlife excursions from the community specifically for polar bear viewing.
The Hamlet of Arviat is a local Inuit community with a population of approximately 2,318. It is the third largest community in Nunavut.
Investment in this project is made possible through CanNor's Community Economic Opportunities Program (CEOP), part of the Aboriginal Economic Development (AED) suite of programs. The CEOP provides project-based support to First Nation and Inuit communities for community economic development.
