OTTAWA — Greg Rickford, Member of Parliament for Kenora, on behalf of the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, today announced funding for an important safety improvement at the Kenora Airport.
This year, the Kenora Airport is receiving $98,868 through the Airports Capital Assistance Program (ACAP) for the replacement of their airfield electrical generator. This replacement is needed to update an existing system which has reached the end of its useful life.
"The Kenora Airport is a vital gateway for local residents, businesses, trade and tourism," said MP Rickford. "This funding will support the safety of all those who use this airport, especially the community and businesses in Northern Ontario that have come to rely on it."
"In addition to improving safety, infrastructure investments at regional airports create jobs and generate economic growth," said Minister Lebel. "This upgrade also supports the efficient movement of cargo – helping to ensure the right conditions for growth and long-term prosperity."
"The Kenora Airport Authority Inc. appreciates the ongoing assistance by the Government of Canada through the ACAP program," said Don McDougald, Chairman of the Kenora Airport Authority Inc. "The assistance provided allows us to maintain our high level of safety and security for our airport. The replacement of our Emergency Generation system allows us to keep our systems up to date and functioning regardless of weather conditions."
In 2012-2013, the Government of Canada will invest more than $27.1 million for 42 projects for safety-related improvements at 28 airports across Canada. Improvements include purchasing/replacing heavy airside mobile equipment; installing wildlife fencing; and rehabilitating runway pavements, airfield lighting and electrical systems.
To date, through ACAP, the Government of Canada has invested more than $587.1 million for 722 projects at 173 airports. Over 99 per cent of these projects were airside safety-related projects such as runways, taxiways and visual aids, as well as heavy airside mobile equipment such as fire trucks and snowplows.The Kenora Airport has received more than $3.7 million for seven projects, including today’s announcement.
